1.    Title

IT Globalization Initiative

2.    Introduction

You have been appointed to be the CIO of the growing American electric car manufacturer called New Breed.”The firm has attracted many investors by going public and, with the cash resulting from its public offering, New Breed has been on an [acquisition binge].

·      Parts manufacturers in Germany and Korea were acquired to vertically integrate the car manufacturing for some of its critical components.

·      Key mines have been bought in South Africa to provide elements needed in the manufacture of the Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery backs and ultra-light composites for the car parts.

·      A call center was also acquired in New Delhi.

As New Breed’s CIO you oversee an IT infrastructure and systemsto service the car manufacturing plant inCalifornia and your battery plant in Nevada. Also you service the New Breed Car dealerships at various locations in the U.S.

Now you must extend that infrastructure to Europe, Asia, and Africa. You need to revise your “IT Strategic Plan” to accommodate these new acquisitions in different continents.

Your plan also needs to be an “IT Strategic Globalization Plan” for New Breed.

Critical is integrating these new locations into New Breed’s materials management system.

Your present IT planning function supportsNew Breed’s current business mission, goals, and strategies.

However, as the company extends its reach to other continents, you need to revise the IT strategic plan and determine how to ensure the IT infrastructure can meet these new requirements. This planning will involve global integration while providing specific services to individual company locations so a global/local strategy is needed.

This is represented in Figure 1.

Also you need to incorporate the new locations into New Breed’s current enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. Having the new locations added to the enterprise system will ensure that New Breed has accurate materials inventory in manufacturing their electric vehicles.

With the cash influx from going public, New Breed has actively sought large corporate contracts for electric vehicles. Recently they just received a large request from the U.S. Treasury Department for battery powered armored vehicles to transport the cash from the mints to the banking system.

To integrate the new locations into the ERP system, New Breed is soliciting bids from consulting firms to ensure that the integration goes smoothly. Smooth integration is key for New Breed to be able to handle the large orders expected and the present large order from Treasury.

This learning activity focuses on IT globalization which is important for firms growing internationally.

New Breed will stay true to its mission to produce energy efficient cars while developing a global/local IT strategy that will enable New Breed to service the firm’s mission on a global basis.

For units of the business in the US, Europe, Asia, and in Africa, New Breed should provide IT services needed in the locations while accounting for differences in local cultures/ethnicity, government regulations, environmental issues and other concerns.

You the CIO will now develop the global/local IT Strategic plan to support New Breed’s global presence.

Achieving or maintaining a global expansion is a key goal among organizations and managers need to know and understand the role and impact of globalization on their company.

In this learning demonstration, you will experience integrating a firm's IT strategy with their global business strategy.

Specificallychanges are needed to New Breed’s ERP architecture to insure that New Breed incorporates the international locations into its material management systems.

Key areas to note—this is my note

A global ERP system will allow

·      the materials locations in Europe, Africa, and Asia to provide current information needed in the production of electric vehicles.

·      Also a global ERP system will allow New Breed to account for other tax laws and regulations in consolidating their financials.

·      The ERP infrastructure will make the transition to international show rooms easier to handle in consolidating their accounting and financial systems.

Understanding IT globalization is basic to the foundational knowledge, skills, and abilities that IT personnel are expected to possess. Effective IT professionals are expected to be aware of differences in governmental regulation and cultural differences for their firm’s many international locations.

IT professionals must be able to communicate effectively (oral and written) to executive level management in a non-jargon, executive level manner that convincingly justifies the need to invest in IT infrastructure improvements. Communication between IT and executive management is key to achieving an IT global strategy that will enable the New Breed to achieve its business mission and to grow the business. This learning demonstration is designed to strengthen these essential knowledge areas, skills, and abilities needed by IT professionals.
