Data mining does not stand alone in businesses. It is unusually part of a larger business intelligence initiative. The goal is to uncover hidden patterns. Privacy concerns arise due to data mining techniques and goals. An example is when Google was facing a lawsuit in 2014 for scanning emails sent by students using Apps for Education. The claim was that Google's data mining practices violated the principles for students' educational privacy. This is just one example of many that shows the privacy implications of data mining.
